Why desi breeds?
Desi cows are native Indian breeds, easy to recognise by their hump and dewlap. They are well suited to Indian heat and conditions. Our milk and ghee come only from our own herd of about 250 desi cows.
The five breeds on our farm
- Gir: from Gujarat’s Gir forest region; domed forehead and long, leaf-like ears.
- Sahiwal: from the Punjab region; reddish-brown and heat-tolerant.
- Tharparkar: from the Thar desert; white-grey and very hardy.
- Rathi: from Bikaner, Rajasthan; brown with white patches.
- Kankrej: from north Gujarat; silver-grey with large lyre-shaped horns.
You can see all 18 native breeds we work with on our Desi Cows page.
